EA82 cam timing
EA82 cam timing
The 3 marks on the fly wheel are for cam timing right?, if i line up the cam marks with the notch on the cam cover, the fly wheel cam timing marks should be on which mark? Any help would be great, thanks.
correct me if im wrong but you match up the flywheel marks, then on one of the pulleys line the notch up. then rotate the whole thing one turn until the flywheel marks line up again, then line up the other cam wheel so the nothces meet. the fist one you did should be about 180 degrees out from the mark.

I had a go and thought i got it but just confused now.....yes i think you are right.......the manual is not easy for me to follow but does read as you described i think. I followed someone elses directions and after i do the left i had the cam mark at about 8 o'clock with the centre mark on the fly wheel...i'm sure thats wrong! so i have to do this over again.
still confused here.....left cam mark matches mark on timing cover so it's at 12 0'clock and the fly wheel cam timing mark in line with mark on housing, i got this so far. Rotated i turn and the marks are all in same position after one revolution? or should the cam sprocket mark be at 6 o'clock? then do the right cam timing? so should the cam marks be at 180 degrees instead of both at 12 o'click?
i reakon i got it this time, the cam sprocket marks should be at 180 degrees from each other and each time the cam sprocket mark is at 12 o'clock in line with mark on timing cover, it'll match up with the centre of the 3 valve timing marks. I have rotated the engine a few times just to make sure everything is ok..... fingers crossed

ea82 is free running engine, if you stuff it up it will just run really badly or not run at all... mine seized a tensioner, and stripped a fair few teeth of one timing belt. thats how I ended up buying the car cheap. I didn't pull it apart, but I got new (genuine) parts and put it back together. My first subaru timing belt...
from memory, the centre mark on the flywheel lines up with the notch on the crankcase, one timing mark is at 12 o'clock, the other is at 6 o'clock. The springs do the tensioning, so you let the springs pull the tensioners as far as they want to go and then lock in place with the bolts.
not the easiest subaru timing belt to do, but definitly not too hard.

yeah, it is so easy when you understand that you use the cam belt line up marks not the ignition timing marks, and that logically you line up the belt inner most first ( the LHS of car belt, dizzy) when satisfied with its fit and line up, rotate engine in specific direction as stated to the other (RHS, turbo or non dizzy side) belts line up pointer mark and NOTE THAT the first belt placed no longer lines up with the marks. It was here in 1993 that I was so bloody impressed with subi engineering !!
