4sp-5sp Brumby conversion axle question

I've just fitted an L-sereis 5sp d/r box to my brumby/brat but have found the stub axles on the box have a different (more) splines than the cups on the inner joints of the axleshafts. In the threads and tech stuff I've read about this conversion no-one mentions this as a potential problem. Has anyone got any suggestions? Can I fit L-series inner joints to a Brumby axleshaft? I really don't want to take the transmission apart to change the stub axles if I can avoid it. Don't know what year the transmission is but its 3.9:1.

Cheers

Sounds like you have the Rarer MPFI or Turbo (?? cant remember which one) Lseries Gearbox which has the more splines like youve already found out.

not to sure how easy they are to get but you may need to put the correct Lseries Inner CV onto your Brumby shaft, but maybe you can do just the Cup ?

probably not mentioned in the Tech manual as wouldnt be very common to get one with the increased spline count id say.
also not gonna be sure on the availabilty of anything in the UK :p

INNERS CAN BE RETRO FITTED TO YOUR SHAFTS, just go do a driveline or running gear specialist if you cant figure it out...

I have the same setup, MPFI 25-spline 5 speed box 3.9 d/r box. From memory we used early Liberty inners...

Cool, thanks for the advice. How do I go about replacing the stub axles then? Got as far as undoing the lock nut and unscrewing the outer ebaring retainer. What next? Don't want to upset the diff settings.

I wouldn't say they're rare Matatak - you haven't been looking in the right places ;)

The MPFI and MPFI turbo 'boxes have the 25 spline count - you need the MPFI NON turbo inner cup, this should fit the cage on your current drive shaft.

The difference between a turbo and non turbo gearbox is the gear ratios, first is the same between both boxes then the rest are different. 2nd is "longer" on the turbo. The turbo Cups are also physically bigger than the MPFI non turbo units.

The above CV mods will get you by for now, but if you blow a CV joint you have to find another 25 spline cup for the new shaft and do it all again...

AFAIK to change the stub axles you have to split the gearbox to get to the diff... Someone correct me if I'm wrong. After this your standard brumby drive shaft will fit as normal.

Thanks for the advice guys. Is there anyway of telling whether I have an MPFI or MPFI turbo box? It just came out of an old shipping container of bits so no idea what vehicle it originally came off.
