once you get the belt covers off you need to get it up to top dead centre...look on the back part of the belt covers and you will see little notches at the top.there are marks on the cam gears too..with the crank at TDC just turn the cam gears till the marks line up...do the right bank first then turn it around a full rotation to TDC again [help if i,m wrong guys]and then do left bank.should be spot on then...been a while since i did an EA82 but i,m sure thats right.
i did mine not to long ago.
i removed the inspection plug from top of the gearbox found tdc on the fly wheel.
the mark (round dot) on driverside cam gear turn untill it lines up with the notch on the belt cover above it.
same for the other side apart from the notch is on the bottom of the belt cover.
just make sure you don't move the crank whilst doing either side

Do the right bank first, turn the crank 2 laps to get the cam gear back to where it lined up first, then do the left bank.chubby37 wrote:once you get the belt covers off you need to get it up to top dead centre...look on the back part of the belt covers and you will see little notches at the top.there are marks on the cam gears too..with the crank at TDC just turn the cam gears till the marks line up...do the right bank first then turn it around a full rotation to TDC again [help if i,m wrong guys]and then do left bank.should be spot on then...been a while since i did an EA82 but i,m sure thats right.
All the marks should line up at the same time, if the belt has marks on the back for alignment, they won't line up again, as long as the gears line up, that's the important thing.

The cams MUST be 180 degrees out from eachother, otherwise the engine will only ever run on one bank (side) of cylinders. I've been there and done that, it is what got me wondering why my MPFI wouldn't run properly when we first got it going...littlewhiteute wrote:Do the right bank first, turn the crank 2 laps to get the cam gear back to where it lined up first, then do the left bank.

To get the cams 180 degrees out from eachother you must turn the crank over an uneven amount of times - so that the first cam lined up is upside down.

Please always consult a workshop manual before atempting a task like this but I would like to stress that you DO NOT use the TDC timing marks on the flywheel (by this I mean the ones that show you the deg marks for ignition timing). There are 2 sets of marks. Please find the 3 little marks on the flywheel (1 long one and 2 smaller ones either side of the large mark). These 3 marks are what you need to use to start the process of fitting new timing belts.
Once you have these 3 marks lined, please try and get the arrow casing mark that is on the bell housing, lined up with the middle mark as best you can.
Line up the "dot" or hole in the passenger (rhd car) camshaft timing wheel to 12 o'clock. Fit the new timing belt on, you'll need to use the long belt for this one. Try and fit new adjuster pulleys and mark sure the tensioner spring is not weak. Once the belt and tensioner are fitted and all tight, turn the crank 1 (only) full revolution and back to the centre of those 3 marks on the flywheel. This now should have the hole in the camshaft pulley at 6 o'clock.
Now line up the drivers side (again this is a rhd car) camshaft timing wheel at 12 o'clock and fit the new belt as per the other side.
Once this is done rotate the crank 2 full revolutions to ensure no fouling of any parts. You can start the engine to make sure all is fine but don't run for too long as you wont have the water pump running. If all is good then continue refitting all removed covers and accessories.
