:) very happy with rebuilt EA81

Post by steptoe » Sun Jun 15, 2008 11:46 pm

After a few dramas with finding good enough components to machine , and the torque wrench saga, and the attepted defingering - the Brumby is up and running again. I am really pleased with how it is running so far and can highly recommend the Watson Racing Cam grind of20/60 with a bit extra overlap to allow for LPG and or turbo later in life.

I did a full recondition apart from crank grind as it came well within spec, bored out 1.0mm or the old 40 thou. Currently running engine in on petrol for first 2000km

To give a plug for a rebuild of your tired old EA81 versus replacing it and a plethora of other components in order to do an EJ swap. Always been a bit unfair comparison of the tired old twenty somethings with 300,000 km on them versus the fairly fresh EJ.s

Congrats on the successful rebuild! I hope it gets your from A to B for many years to come.
Note that most of the EJ22 build's we've done here recently have been based on EJ's with over 250,000kms on them. They all still knock the pants off an EA car and last ages (well except for Alex's first motor but prolly something to do with it's constant reaming!) I rekon the converison is still easier than rebuilding an EA motor - but I can't say I have actually done a rebuild tho.
But naturally not a thread for the same old debate...
Congrats again for a successful rebuild!

Good to hear you're happy steptoe, can you post your cam specs?
I have a tighe cam grind 113, 25/65, 270 net, [email protected], .398 valve lift to put in my spare motor when I rebuild it. ;)
Regards

Gary ;)

Hi all , I'm very interested in EA81/82 cam profiles and what is available .

All I've noticed for the EA82's anyway are a couple from Ivan Tighs place .

Off the top of my head they offer a 20-60 and something a bit longer like eg 30-70 . I should start a separate cam thread shouldn't I ?

Cheers A .

Hey steptoe, glad your pleased with your rebuild after all the "antics".

Been quite the saga, look after the motor, don't let it overheat - this happened to my rebuilt motor 9 months after its rebuild... its still sitting on the bench maybe looking at fixing it up... otherwise its an EJ replacement.

Enjoy!

The cam specs were not on the tag from memory but the owner of Watsons (Peter?) would be able to tell anyone interested. It cost me $10 for an express envelope from aussie post each way. The cam grind was $95 + GST. My machine shop also ground the followers at $8 each.

I tell you what though, I very nearly ended up smashing my conrod into the back end of me new pistons (like someone else in here recently) for as I was driving the last gudgeon home i suspected it flopped out to one side and sure enough a peak through the hole revealed my error -so easily done I now realise

And Bennie, my radiator tank sprung a leak that has the finest spray that seals up at op temp. To start from cold and drive a few Km and stop it starts a fine mist. Carrying a tube of silver seal for just in case before repair.

Fuel figures for highway at run in speeds ~ some 70, 80,95,100,110,120,130 varied speeds different intervals and driving it like i hate it but not over revving it (instructions from my machine shop guy of 25 years of service) are 8.75 litres per 100km and 9.0 /100km. Speedo checks out reading accurate in speed and distance.

More on the performance that i put down to cam grind. I can take off with a YELP from the tyres (without meaning to :) ) and feels ready to rip at 115 to 120 and just keeps pulling at 130 on normal cats piss motion lotion

Ended up 170km from home when taking a wee break thought I'd check on the hole in the radiator tank and found three little pin holes spraying so out came the silver seal and I high tailed it back home without another drop lost, muttering something about driving a new donk on a dodgy radiator....mutter, mutter
