intermittent prob carby? ea 82 engine

gday fellas, over the last couple of weeks, driving home from work i have noticed when doin about 70 or 80 ks up a longish hill (500m) at around 3500 to 4000 rpm at approx 3/4 throttle, the engine will begin to die sometimes and miss fire, if i back off and just cruise bout 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, it will be ok again, but it will happen again when put my foot down.... almost like a flat spot, but doesnt pull through it and does a little backfire...
could this be the timing out slightly or carby related?
or something else completely
its an ea82 engine

Mate - I can't help you. But I do have the same problem with my L Series. Mine occurs at 5000 rpm. I suspect its something to do with my Weber (like a power valve or fuel blockage or something). A mate of mine is going to look at it at the end of the week
If you have a standard carby, I'd check the vacuum secondaries are operating correctly.

The engine isn't pinging is it batesy? Turn your stereo down and let us know what you hear...
Mine tends to ping after a bit of load up a hill, I just back off a bit and its all good.

na no pinging at all, think i will check the timing today and maybe get some new plugs for it...

How's your distributor cap? I replaced my fuel filter & fuel pump before I figured it might be the cap... contacts were badly pitted/corroded. New cap, new car!

I have a very similiar problem with my ea81 if it means anything. I replaced the cap, button and intake filter one at a time and the problem still goes on. Tomorrow I will replace the points and reset the timing. I am pretty new to subarus, but I am thinking that the L series has elec. points, but anyway I would check all of the above. For me, poor torque response can be associated with worn contact points or incorrect gapping (also check your plugs). And incorrect timing may have an effect and possibly on the life and gap of your plugs.
Then there is the fuel side of things. Replace your inline fuel filter. Does the standard carb have an inbuilt filter? (sorry I wouln't know, but this was a constant problem with a standard carb fitted to a previous car of mine). If so, clean it out.
If you go through these systematically and you have no luck, then you can look at other more serious possibilities.
