L Series engine options

Yep, another EJ-into-EA thread, because I can't find anything that quite answers my questions
.
I've just bought an L series with a knackered EA82. I might be able to get it running, but it's leaking a fair bit of oil, so getting it over the pits for rego will be a struggle. I don't fancy doing much (any) work on the old engine, which leaves me pondering options for replacement engines.
EJ22s are popular, but it was my understanding that if you're going up more than 20% in capacity, it had to be engineer approved - meaning brake upgrades and lots of dicking around. How much trouble have people (especially in WA) had getting EJ22-converted Ls registered?
What about Forester EJ20 or even Impreza EJ18? And how much can I expect to pay for any of these engines in Perth?
