L Series engine options

Post by GOD » Sun May 25, 2008 10:24 pm

Yep, another EJ-into-EA thread, because I can't find anything that quite answers my questions :).

I've just bought an L series with a knackered EA82. I might be able to get it running, but it's leaking a fair bit of oil, so getting it over the pits for rego will be a struggle. I don't fancy doing much (any) work on the old engine, which leaves me pondering options for replacement engines.

EJ22s are popular, but it was my understanding that if you're going up more than 20% in capacity, it had to be engineer approved - meaning brake upgrades and lots of dicking around. How much trouble have people (especially in WA) had getting EJ22-converted Ls registered?

What about Forester EJ20 or even Impreza EJ18? And how much can I expect to pay for any of these engines in Perth?

The 20% in capacity is an interesting one... I thought it was that way in Vic but when you read into it the whole thing is open for interpretation - The engine has to be similar in weight and performance... Go figure.

The brakes will be fine, if you really want to and can get a donor car for all the bits the Crossbred brake conversion is the way to go, hands down everytime.

You could stick the EJ20 in there if your really concerned about capacity increases. The amount of work will be the same - that said, either way an EJ would be a huge improvement over the EA, you won't be disappointed.

Cost... make an estimation and double it, that usually does the trick.

Good luck, there are many people running around with EJ22, big wheels and standard brakes - hit up Alex, he has this exact setup.

The wiring is usually the most daunghting part of the conversion.

Cheers
