heartache and despair is ...

suspecting and discovering that just after a complete engine rebuild my torque wrench is not up to spec :( :(

It is (now was) a micrometer style that had its arse starting to come loose and rattle. Just before I went to retension my heads I unscrewed it a little and back in some. The torque up felt soft as so went and borrowed another to compare and mate mine is way out. It wasn't so bad on the rebuild but I just tested one of the through block bolts and it retorqued up quite a bits, so now, I got the sh1ts, big time.

Knowing this I am gonna have to remove and dismantle and reassemble the baby again, new gaskets etc. One consolation is that this wrench hardly done much since a rebuild in 2001 of my old EA81 - makes you think... it did OK for 180,000 and the heads on me turbo too :(

I have had a gutful of cars lately and may just spend less time on my internet time.

I bought a new micrometer style (was tempted a Watson and Brown or Sidchrome pin style but..) and on the instructions that eventually wear off is a warning not to use if the end comes unscrewed !!!

That really bites

So how far do you have to dismantle it? Right down to the crank? or could you get away with re-torqueing the heads?

concern is with the con rod bolts. they are never really that tight when torqueing up anyway but.. knowing that the wrench not up to spec would not be a good feeling on a trip and developing an internal problem.Might have been OK but for the labour of another strip and the cost of another rebuild kit far outweighs the stupid self blame if/when things delf destruct as a result of sh!t tools/unobservant operator - and the cost of repair then !!

The gudgeon pins came out so-o-o easily - it was almost a pleasure to strip a motor with 69 kilometres on it :)

Motor is out, heads off then I cut my finger on the previously unknown sharp edge of the speedi sleeve flange left intact on the back of the crank ~ cause for a new post entitled "injuries to oneself"

I'd look at it this way , the time and effort taken to make sure its done properly will pay off later . You won't have to wonder if it'll go bang and die horribly . Peace of mind is worth a lot in a hostile world .
Besides , you car will rest easier knowing you won't attack it with a sledge hammer to make sure it's truly dead .

Cheers A .
