your other option is a solex carburettor from a TD Gemini not as big as a weber but bigger than a hitachi and less rubbish to deal with.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TE-Gemini-Ca ... 415c99693f

I unbolted one of these off a 1983 touring wagon but it was stuffed sadly.

I don't know which manifold you have but I'm betting it is the later model on which this carby bolts to (the 83 had a late model motor in it)

Im sure there would be one out there somewhere if this is too expensive

oops thats probably why I found it so hard to find one on the internet

So you need a Nikki not a solex

Like this? http://www.carburetorfactory.com/expvw34.html

Just a diagram though. Looks amazingly like an exploded Hitachi ;) Nah I'll just get this Hitachi replaced and save up for a Weber.

Checked the vac advance today, it works fine :( I've pretty much run out of ideas and things to check/try. So I'm just going to give up on this carb for now. Bloody frustrating how it was working so well on the other engine, but take it off for a week or two and now it runs like absolute crap.

Talking to dad on the phone a week or two ago, telling him about how the replacement engine was in and everything from here on should be plain sailing. He said to me "Well then after this there should be nothing left to go wrong!"
I said "yeah except the carb"
Amazing how right I was eh? :???:

It's Sunday and as always I had an interesting chat with the Engineer I know. I told him that this carb worked fine on the other engine but not on this, and I had 165 psi on all four. He suggested that someone has rebuilt this engine sometime in the past with high comp pistons? maybe special cam? and because of that my carb isn't jetted correctly to suit. Even if it wasn't high comp gear it's possible my jets are still incorrect? Would make alot of sense...

Yeah I don't know about the build with high comp pistons, I thought a freshly rebuilt EA engine would be pushing 180ish psi in each pot, so I don't think it's really that high comp.

But I could be very wrong too.

Little wonder you are making enquiries about thelmans wagon for sale. Oh despondent one, if only you had a buck for every view of this adventure. Weren't the guys back at API willing to help if you got any problems?

Have you tried the two bolt exhaust joiner disconnect trick to become a noisey stock car for a quick diagnostic blat around the block to see if it is choking on the exhaust?

You're probably right, but I'm still hoping incorrect jets is the problem :)

Jonno I only asked about the L because he said he was going to scrap it otherwise, seems a real shame to scrap such a nice car but it could already be too late. Offering less than half of what he wanted was a bit of an insult anyway :(

has the engineer given you a bum steer before? I have rebuilt a few motors over the years changing cams and compression ratios and not had that radical change in performance of your current experience, to need to alter jetting.

Something appears too concidental with this motor goin in.....

$700 is better than what the L is worth as scrap at a metal trader...if that is what you can afford that is it. Maybe you could get him to strip it of his valuable accessories to trim the price??

Not sure what you mean by bum steer? We were just talking about it and he offered incorrect jets as a possible cause, since there's no air leaks etc. And this motor is 84', other one was 82', could be minute differences in fuel delivery? But it's only the 84' block so dunno what difference it should make :???:
Just have to wait for the replacement carb and see.

Doesn't have an EGR valve, the casting on the manifold is just blanked off.

Eh silverbullet,
Last weekend when I was up at that Murray Bridge wreckers the L series '83 wagon model did have a complete EA81 engine in it and as I got that EA82 carbi real cheap it might be the way to go if you can get up there. Yea if the EGA valve is blocked that will fool people into thinking the carbi is at fault too.

Cheers Bryan

Interesting, I haven't looked into the legality myself and anyway I don't have the cash spare for all the stuff that goes with an EJ, let alone the engine! Everyone says you can get one for a few hundred but I've never seen one below $500...then there's the loom to figure out...computer...adapter plate...no thanks :D
