Whole thing is squeaky clean and everything flows like a champ. I suspected the jamming power butterfly was because it was catching on the edge of the base gasket. No butterfly probs since and no idle probs since.

It is secondhand of sorts. When I got it, it was part of a SCAT Weber progressive conversion kit, rebuilt and set up. Since then I've had it apart a few times for various reasons including taking a couple of the jets down to sane values. Probably would have been fine for a built 2.0L but a stock 1.8 not a chance.

How would a blocked idle air bleed do that? Serious question. I'm guessing it would stop the A/F mix being that and pump raw fuel through. The idle is tuneable and steady and different idle jets make a difference.

I'm not ruling it out, these are genuine questions.

I should have said partially blocked idle air bleed.

Weber DCOE,IDF etc use an idle jet with an air bleed orifice, with an "F" number, F3 being the smallest and most rich.

The idle air bleeds on this are non configurable and aren't much more than holes. On the bright side that makes them easily visible. When I put the carb back together last time (last week) I gave everything a clean for the sake of it even though the only contamination I could see was when the motor vomited black crud into the carb. I'm assuming it was when the motor dieseled because of the stuck butterfly.
