Auto trans service on 3.0 litre

This is probably a dumb newbie question, but I'm trying to find information on servicing the auto in a 2001 3.0 litre Outback. The manual I have only refers to changing the oil and filter. Is there anything else involved? Adjustments etc? Special tools?

The manual also states that it is necessary to remove the left hand guard to access the filter? Do they actually mean the guard, or just the splash plate underneath?

Hi Phil, I have no experience with the transmission that you have got, but it is possible that there are no adjustments to make, sometimes that does happen.
I really hope that the manual is referring to a guard on the transmission under the vehicle on the left hand side, it would seem a bit silly to have to take off a mudguard to get at the tranny's oil filter, but like I said, I have not done one of those before so maybe someone else knows better?

its probably pretty similar to mine. A screw on filter on the passenger side of the transmission. No adjustments need to be made. Just change the filter and oil and away you go. you should notice a pretty big difference as well

Should just be the splash plate. I know on my dad's H6 the trans oil filter is visible when you look under the front left of the car, and (from memory) is easily accessible.

The 6s came with a transmission cooler standard, and a filter mounted up the front. There might be another filter on the side of the transmission, I don't know.

Mmmm, found that yesterday, it had been leaking fairly badly and was seriously clogged with oil/mud. Hence the reason for the service. As for another filter up the front, I didn't spot that, better have another look.

Sorry to bump this again, but I'm really hoping I can find someone who has done a trans service on one of these. I read the manual closely, and it does appear the AT filter on a 3.0 litre is buried somewhere behind the inner guard. However I can't even spot a line or hose running up there, and I'm kind of loathe to pull the inner guard out just for a look.

just follow the cooler hoses form the box forwards. it should be reasonably obvious

Looking at the factory manual it appears the 3.0 has a remote filter under the left guard .The most simplest way,as VV said, would be to follow the hoses from the radiater/oil cooler back.Do you have the factory manual?Tow hitches ther are 2 on ebay at the moment.

Different people have different ides on what a trans service involves, if you just want to replace the fluid in the pan and the filter then thats easy, dump the oil out of the drain plug in the trans pan and replace the filter which is located on the passenger side of the transmition for all 4 cyl subaru vehicles, for 6 cyl subarus the trans filter is infact mounted behind the the passenger side fog light area,
however that method only replaces the trans fulid in the pan and filter, there is still the better part of 10 litres of fluid left in the converter and solenoids etc. the only way to change that is to do a power flush...

also there is a small gauze filter inside the pan on the valve body... not fun to replace imo
