engine knocking

hi well i just bought a 88 brumby with a ea82 and i have been driving it around for about a week and tonight a knocking sound has started as if it was a valve or sumfin like that but im not to sure on these sort of thigs and also there is a lil bit of oil on the battery that has come out of the carby please help

EA82? why do people do that? does it have any mods done to the chassis rails at all?

could just be a Hydrualic lifter which is shot or dirty.
best bet may be to swing bny a mechanics shop and get them to take a quick look at it.

yer that wuld be the easiest thing to do and you should get a more clear idea on what it actually is.

very hard to pinpoint something described as a 'knock'

If its lifter tick - knowing the EA82, it most likely is - It will go away after a decent drive, sometimes up to 30 mins.

Lifter tick can sound like someone's in the engine with a hammer or a soft tick that can be distinctly placed on one or both sides of the engine.

Check that the oil isn't airated, if it is it means that the oil pump seals are shot and the oil pump is trying to pump oil but is getting some air as well.

I my opinion, dropping an EA82 into a brumby or MY is a waste of time. Its either EA81 you stick with or EJ.

Lifters is more of a tick but be wary of your idler bearings as they make a knock. Seize one of these puppies and car will come to a dead stop(snapped timing belt).

The lifter issue will go away with regular flushing of the oil and use a semi synth(stay away from the full mineral as the stuff has way too much shite in it - remember the EA's are all alloy - they hate mineral oil and gum up).

I have Pennzoil in at the moment and it is working a treat...15W40 semi synth and changed every 5000km or when the colour changes from honey to syrup...

. Probably overkill but I havent had a single tick since(around 3-4 months now). It is a legacy of having a mini(I change the oil in it every 1500-2000km due to the gearbox being in the engine sump and using the same oil as the engine - destroys oil very quickly!!)

Ditto with the checking of all the nuts and stuff with everything holding the motor and suspension in. I went around mine over the week-end and found my engine steady bolts loose as well as the passenger engine mount chewed out. Replaced the engine mount and re-torqued everything I could get my hands on - all good and no rattles or clunks now:)

well first just to clear this up i didnt put the ea82 in it lol but i took it to my machanic yesterday and im pritty sure that the ticking was that the water pump had F#@#ed it self and now we are just trying to work out where the oil has come from but yeah im a bit f@#$ed off seeing as i have only had it for a week

Hey Mooney,
If you can't find where the oil is coming from I'd place my bet firm on the oil pump leaking from somewhere. I say somewhere as there are many areas on the oil pump itself that oil can leak (or be pushed out from).

If your going to be playing with the water pump you might as well see to the oil pump too, there's not a lot more work involved to do it from that point.

While you are at it...you may as well check everything in there too. Do the water pump, L and R idler pulleys(check and replace if they have any jerky rolling happening), cam seals(dammit - I pulled my covers off when I was cleaning the engine bay - LH one is seeping!!!:mad:), oil pump(replace the seals...) and do the timing belt if it is an unknown mileage one...

May as well do it while you are in there - kill a few more birds with one stone...
