recommended engine oil

Post by subie_1st_timer » Wed Mar 19, 2008 7:16 pm

wanna change my oil in the brumby

ive been using penrite oils for sometime now but what grade is recommended for a ea81 with 314000km on the clock??. i seen that the guy i brought it from had an invoice from the mechanic and they used castrol 15w/40... a bit thin i would think. should i go a bit thicker to a 20w/50?

would a synthetic or semi syn be worth while?

Penrite hpr 40 or 50 would be perfect for her.

I've used 10w30 semi-synthetic in my EA81 for the past 2 years and it works fine.

Engine's done around 370,000km, no leaks, very little extra oil needed between servicings (~ 150ml extra oil per 10,000km), fuel consumption is around 8.7 litres per 100km.

Cringe as you may.

I use what ever cheap oil I can get. So long as its petrol motor oil and its clean i'm happy with it. Today (due to uni student budget) I lowered myself to the budget supermarket oil :???:

I usually keep my oil the same brand between oil and filter changes but today i was desprate... love that lifter tick (all good now though).

My local parts joint has this oil "power max" 5L for $20. Goes pretty good, I got no complaints... and my engines are still running fine.

Cheers

My 91 Brumby had 430000 on the clock when I bought it and it used no oil. I immediately did a compression check on all cyclinders . Cyl's kPa's were 1123-1121-1120-1121. See the compression for the later Brumbies is 1128 kPa. I thought this to be ok. I use 15-40 Nulon Diesel engine oil in all my Toyotas so I have started using the 15-40 diesel oil in the Brumby drives good and still uses no oil. Any comments from u guys out there.

Hmmm... Thread dig, nice ;)

That's a top effort with your brumby! Gotta be happy with that!

How times change, I now got with a Penrite all mineral 20-60W engine oil and keep it clean - either change it every 10k km as usual or when it gets dirty looking...

Cheers
