Squeaking Clutch

Post by kj0 » Sun Jun 15, 2014 12:56 pm

Hi All.
First post in a long time.

Just noticed last night while going through the Maccas Drive-Thru that whenever I press on my clutch it now squeaks. It sounds like it isn't lubed (Sounds like two bits of rubber rubbing). It is certainly louder outside the car and occurs both when the car is Idle, moving and turned off - through all gears.

My thought is that it could be the throw-out but it has been a good 3 1/2 years since I've had to get anywhere near my clutch.

I am replacing the LH CV today anyway.

Has anyone come across something similar, have an idea what to look for, or need additional info?

Thanks Guys

A few things come to mind - dry bush on the clutch fork or a dry joint at te clutch pedal or the clutch pedal's pivot point is dry/return spring is dry.

Other things that come to mind is a worn clutch cable where it's worn through the plastic sheath into the metal one internally.
Or the fingers/return spring on the clutch are causing it.

I had the same on my L for ages, it drove me nuts! A replacement cable and clutch setup did the trick (EJ conversion).

Cheers

I have this at the moment. Replaced the cable with no joy. Sprayed the pedal pivot and spring. Tried a bit of lube at the clutch fork pivot but who knows if it really got in there? Plus it could already be damaged. You could try some lube on a long, thin paint brush to get to the clutch fork pivot if you need to. Just waiting on doing the new clutch when I replace my engine to see what the clutch and associated bearings are like.

FYI you can't buy the Subaru clutch grease they use from the factory (apparently). This Honda one is suppose to be a great alternative:

I'll be using it when I do my clutch.

Never heard of the GZ model, so I'm not sure if your car comes with a hydraulic clutch system or the cable system. If it's the cable system, then just make sure the cable is running freely inside is outer sleeve. This can be done but disconnecting it at the clutch fork and pushing the cable in and out. While the cable is disconnected, try moving the clutch fork and feel for tight spots. Other than this, it's pretty much remove the gearbox and check pivot ball and release bearing. 9 times out of 10 I've found that the clutches only make skeaking noises when they are just about at the end of their working life.
