brumby axle assembly removal?

Post by drkevorkian » Sat Jun 17, 2006 5:45 pm

am pulling out the front axle shaft assembly, and the book shows that a puller tool is required. any backyard techniques to do this without the tool?

the problem i am having is how to pull the axle from the housing and bearings. i am wanting to do this to replace the complete CV unit.

How do i remove it myself without a puller tool?

I use a hammer. get the castle nut off, lift that corner of the car, remove the wheel, knock out the ball joint ( control arm at the wheel side ). This should allow you to move the assembly around a bit. Now pull the CV off the gearbox, use the movement in the assembly to get it all the way off. now put the castle nut back on backwards and screw it on until it's flush with the end of the CV. Hit this with a hammer ( rubber mallet might be best ) and it should push it out backwards, undo the castle nut a bit and hit again. once it's moved a bit it *should* slide out the rest of the way reasonably easily.

I usually find sliding the CV back in to be the hardest part, but I've got a tool made by a mate of mine that pulls them through for me now.

Another way is to use a 2 leg puller. One leg on back of hub to tie rod end extension part of hub and one behind the hub. And simply wind the pressure on. It works for me but i do have a 10 tonne puller..... or the above mentioned works will.
As for putting back on, line it all up on the gearbox splines and pin and push through hub by hand. With the car in gear, now use the castlenut and suitable washers to pull the shaft back (the washers should push on the inner rave of the outer bearing) through to a point you can get the disc back on and use it to do the finally and torque.

what do you mean by this... i have got the assembly sliding freely, but cannot free the CV from the gearbox spline as i dont have enough movement to clear it. what is this ball joint?

Why not use CV grease, it's usually readily accessible all over your engine bay from the last cv boot the let go...well...was on my MY anyway
