Splitting Crankcase halves

Post by littlewhiteute » Fri Aug 17, 2012 12:53 pm

Good afternoon gentlemen,

I have an EA81S that is proving difficult to split the crankcase halves.

Have you Subie boys any tips?
Regards

Gary ;)

Stupid question Gary... you did get the hidden bolt?

the one hidden deep inside one of the sides. (can't remember which half)

There are plenty of "G" spots on the EA81.

Not a problem, I seem to remember Steptoe advising Silverbullet about this hidden "G" spot when he pulled his EA81 apart.

I know it's been a while, but just couldn't remember that bolt from the last engine. Thanks again.

Nah Toonga I found that bolt when I did mine :) it was the 2x tiny M6 or M8 bolts around the front main seal that were completely caked in old muck and completely invisible

Took about 10 mins to have the crank and cam out.

Off to work tomorrow to press the cam gear off, and get the cam reprofiled and lifters refaced.

Hey Gary, how tight was that center one? :) took me a lot of huffing and puffing bracing myself against the bench pushing the breaker bar with both hands holding milk crate engine stand between my legs...then it cracked and let out a hiss

ABSOLUTE proof the reason they call that bolt the "G" spot

It was tight alright, breaker bar and another bar across head studs, two arms AND knees, then bang.
Then my rattle gun could underdo it.

the last bolt always is ...if you left it to last rather than just crack 'em all at the beginning :)

A lesson here too ....a guy with loads of experience not asking if he should go EJ or how to power up an EA81 , he's just quietly gone about a sweet rebuild of an EA81 including a cam spec change. Quiet, until he got caught out :D
