Brumby 4WD Hi Lo selector question
Brumby 4WD Hi Lo selector question
Recently bought this showthread.php?t=16780
for parts and some fun at the inlaws in Kempsey when we visit.
Fixed the slopy shifter pretty easily and now it goes into reverse but there is still someting wrong with the 4WD selector.
I put a wheel nut on the selector shaft cause that is the right thread and it had no nut on the shaft.
Now it seems like the selector shaft is not coming back far enough ie the 4WD lever/handle doesnt go down far enough.
Me old mate dave who done 400,000ks on his Brumby reckons it may be in the internals of the selector part of the gear box.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as we have limited time when visiting the inlaws at Kempsey.

Ok.. First thing that comes to mind, is that it's bound up in 4WD. Try and drive in reverse (maybe slight turn can help) with a firm amount of pressure on the 4WD lever. Otherwise, try and jack up one wheel off the ground. If it has torque-bind then that wheel will try and spin as it comes off the ground.
Second thing is to check that the nut you fitted isn't locking up the shaft from turning (sorry can't picture where you fitted it) if it's supposed to. Sometimes these shafts have a locknut next to the main nut to allow the shaft to tightened but still have movement.

Thanks RSR.
Sorry I will try to explain a little better.
It will go from 2wd to 4wd hi but doesnt seem to go into 4wd lo. The 4wd selecto doesent seem to have the travel for some reason.
Yer I may have done the nut up to tight but thought as it doesent rotate it shouldn't matter. Well at least i didn't think it was ment to rotate.
I wonder if it is just a matter of adjusting the pushrod linkage length.

No worries mate.. I just read the bit that said the lever wouldn't go down far enough. This usually means you're coming out of 4WD into 2WD.revmax wrote:Thanks RSR.

One thing to make sure of, is the box a dual range box? check for the dual range rod running along the side of the box. I have seen many people change the box over, after been told it's a dual range box, only to find out it's not.
Secondly, if you could send pics of this nut insitu that also might help.
Cheers,
Paul

OK, never thought it may only be single range box.
Next time we go to Kempsey I will have another play with the linkage and take some photos.

Well it is only single range. ( always assumed they were all dual range)
Fitted some 13' wheels, another air cleaner, second hand water pump and radaitor then went and gave it a 4WD floggin in the bush.
Got stuck in the mud to when the motor stopped. DOH! was a broken fusable link wire, twitched it back together and off we went.
