Brumby Auto Conversion
Hi Guys,
New to the forums, also new to subarus.
I currently have 4 Brumby Utes (bought as a package deal) and am looking at converting one from manual to automatic (I have a disability which prohibits me from driving a manual)
Just after any advice on what transmission i could use (model numbers etc)
Any tips-tricks-advice or criticism appreciated.

Welcome to the board Skippy, is Sonny tied up in the back of one of the brumbys? Wheres Dad, Mark and Jerry. did the helicopter crash?(sorry very sorry)
now for some answers to the auto questions.
The MY 1982 touring wagon has an Automatic that bolts directly to the EA81 motor which has no computer. as would the automatic box from the L series, but I don't know if those boxes were computer controlled or not.
Then there is the EJ alternative where by an EJ18 or upwards is bolted in with a 4EAT automatic with computers for the engine and transmission.
in either case you would need all of the bits eg tailshaft, console, shift (the auto speedo cluster if you wanted it to look factory)
there is a list of automatic transmissions here at wikapedia

I'm curious as I was looking at a 1982 touring wagon at the wreckers last week and the 3EAT is tiny compared to the 4EAT.

Yeah any 3AT from a MY or L series will fit.

we built an EA82T 3spd auto brumby years ago. It was the first engine i ever wired up.
The 3 speed is not a great auto, but it fit in the tunnel no problem and stood up to the EA82T for many years with no troubles.
it was pretty cool driving round in an auto brumby. I liked it

If you use the MY Auto box, The gearbox cross member and the side plates that bolts to the body is different to a manual one and you need to replace them with the matching auto stuff. The easiest thing would be to find, if you can a good auto box from a MY 1800 wagon and then it would just bolt on. Efficiency and reliability might then be an issue.

Like most of the guys are saying.. You can use automatic trans from any MY Series wagon, sedan or coupe. You will need all the associated bits to go with it, like crossmember, linkages, speedo cable and various other bits. I'd recommend you find one complete in a wreck and go from there.
You can use the L.Series automatic box but you'll have more headaches as the box is shorter in overall length. We used to use the L.Series main body and swap over the rear and front housings (including torque convertor), so it's good to use them if you find the MY one is a little tired.
