New gearbox questions

Post by someguy » Mon May 24, 2010 9:02 am

Hi All

I was very kindly donated a turbo EA 5 speed out an RX from Justin35 yesterday

I will be dropping it in a non turbo L Series wagon (EA82) due to my gearbox needing serious work.

I know I will need different drive shafts for it as the splines are slightly bigger.

But is everything else the same (e.g clutch etc etc)

I am planning to knock it off in a weekend and I don't really have time for unexpected surprises :P

Also does anyone know a good place in SA to buy Turbo L Series shafts?

Thanks

(p.s can the gearbox be raised into the car from underneath instead of having to pull the engine out as I don't have a hoist.)

everything else should go together like lego.
I've seen some difference in shifter linkages before, ie your existing linkage might not bolt straight onto the new gearbox (BrennyV ran into this issue once when swapping from a front wheel drive gearbox to a dual range + vacuum centre diff lock gearbox). From memory it was a very simple mod to make it work, just an extra hole needed to be drilled into a minor mounting bracket.

if your shafts are good then you might consider just swapping the inner cups from 23 spline ones to 25 spline ones. I think they swap over onto the same shafts but I could be wrong.

Raising the gearbox from underneath should be fine, I've done this many times and often it's easier than ripping the engine out when you consider all the disconnections, fluid changes and stuff involved in doing that.

I am a weakling. Have used a car hoist and transmission jack to fit a five speed into a slightly more cramped Brumby tunnel and it was a bastard of a job struggle. Since have done engine out for swap and then fitted in the manual instead of auto with car on stands and a cheapy chain block and tackle from above and it was a dream to fit in this manner. If you have spare flywheel to get machined up if fit new clutch at same time, and that bearing for spigot shaft buy a few before hand. And if you have a spare cklutch fork and clips in case of their own little time delay surprises. Drain fluids from engine and box first still plug up bearbox end to avoid further dribbles whichever way you do it. I have an old tail shaft bung I usually forget to use.

Multi point fuel injection L series shaft are also 25 spline gearbos output drive splines so you can source those shafts as well or the DOJ from them.

its wayyyy easier to lift the gox from underneath. Two normal strength fellas can do it pretty easy, one underneath the car, one in the engine bay lifting the box into position. Once its lifted high enough, chuck it on a jack (bottle or trolley jack. Scissor jack will be pain to raise it higher)
