tappet noise.????????? ea81 brumby.....

Post by saunders347 » Thu Jun 03, 2010 11:48 pm

hi all, got a problem with my brumby............. just put a secondhand engine in my brumby, while engine was out did valve stem seals and set the tappets...... started the engine and runs sweet...... after a minute or so a tapping starts from the right hand rocker cover ( sounds like a tappet)... after around 5 minutes or a small drive and the car is hot the sound goes away and sounds perfect.... First of all i thought i must have set a tappet too loose so i did the clearances again and still no luck....... i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem in the past......... thinking of dropping the tappets tighter to see if i can reduce the tapp????? any suggestions?????

possible valve seat???????

I am of the understanding that other market EA81s had hydraulic lifters. I had one with easy adjust tappet bits, but seen others that had anti adjust style clips? on the adjusters and I suspect it was also hydraulic lifter job. Chances are you have hydraulic that is a bit sensitive to something, maybe . Might not be for your engine, but mine with a 16/56 cam I would set the gap to 4 thou hot, both in and ex, no troubles, no noise for 180,000km

hi mate.......... yeh my engine is an adjustable tappet type which would have solid lifters i guess...... i am setting my tappets at 9 thou for intake and 14 though for exhaust (cold).... might try dropping douwn to 5 thou and see if i can stop the tappet noise......... then i can at least tell if its tappet noise or its more like a sunken valve seat????

wonderful thing is that you need to split block to get at lifters to replace or inspect. I got mine to op temp when tappet covers were refitted clean with new gaskets to speed up removal time after engine off. Figured at op temp not much clearance is needed. My cam profile may have been the difference for my measurements, NOT necessarily work with yours
