impreza diff gears into L-series diff

Post by Pav » Wed May 05, 2010 11:05 pm

Hi, I have an impreza diff in my L-series at the moment from an auto (1997), and was wondering if I can put the gears from it into an L-series diff and then bolt that up?

Yes, please tell us more.

Like how did you get the diff there in the first place? It would save us changing centres over.

Why cant you use whole housing from impreza in L series - straight swap?
The only difference would be the flange will be different.

The crown will not fit on L series centre as the bolts will require re-drilling/tapped as newer diff has different size bolts compared to l series (L series is smaller bolt holes).

Cheers

Well, the whole driveline (eng, box, tailshaft?,diff) is impreza, and the rear diff was a straight swap except for the driveshafts which had to have the inner cv joint race welded to the shaft (due to different splines). Now the inner joint has demolished itself and the only way is to either re-weld it all over again (not liking that idea and more expensive than i thought) or making up a custom shaft by re-splining (expensive! but at least I can re-place the joints easier).

If I could use the L-series diff, then the stock driveshafts can slot straight in (cheap), except that the gear ratios are obviously different to the awd box (I think 4.11? not sure).

AP: So how much effort or cash would it take to re-drill the holes and tap them? Possibly a home job? or professional needs to do it?

I wanna do this as cheaply as possible as I have a full stock L-series rear driveline/tailshaft sitting at home.

Also another idea put forward was to stick the male ends from the L-series diff into the Impreza diff (Is that even possible???)

cheers

Usually the inner part of the l series doj(cv) fits inside the outer part of the impresa doj so no modication is required, Maby you should shop around the wreckers to find the matching doj's

I just did some reading up, and found out that only the EARLY lib/impreza diffs have male stubs coming out of the diff! And that my style of diff won't work with those shafts cos apparently it will then be too short and pull the cv joint out completely (which is exactly what happened to me).

So I might just look around for an old impreza or liberty diff with the gear ratio that I need, I think that may be the easiest way? Anybody got a list of what gears which diff came out with?

first thing to do would be to check what ratio you have. If you need a 4.11 male stub diff I can tell you that my Gen1 ser2 auto has a 4.11 that should fit. You can't have mine though... :P

Yeah mate find out what ratio you need and i can ask a few guys i know that may have diff for you. Just bring a L rear cv and test if it fits on the diff first:)

Plus that would be easier for you as i need that tailshaft off the wreak remember?? :)
LOL.

I'll check if i have an early Lib diff here, i think i do, and will test if the rear cv fits on:)
