succesfully got a ea81 to run and drive in a L

Post by brenton » Sun Aug 09, 2009 6:01 pm

hey guys i got my ea81 motor running in my Lseries , it was pretty easy i managed to run my larger l series flywheel and clutch over the smaller ea81 setup. with a little bit of filing on the bottom section of the motor. (the smaller ea81 clutch disc wont mate to the larger spline of the L 5speed, i have herd about using a gemini 1.6l petrol disc but ive never tried it)
Had to run a new trigger wire to the fuel pump due to changing to the old dist. setup. as i couldnt figure out where it was getting its source from. left the engine loom on the motor and joined it into the L's one. throttle cable mated up okay , engine mounts lined up nicely. just hooked up the fuel line and not the return yet , might run a t-piece with the return if i fine the pump overpowering the carby. ea81 long water pipe fits up well , but the lower one would be best if you found and pipe that fits well i made the ea81 fit.

now i have a motor i can adjust the tappets on instead of the dreaded hydro tappets and cracking oil pump seals of the ea82.
cheers brenton

Good achievement, a lot of people ask whether it can be done or not.

Sounds good... Interested to know... It would show a power gain than EA82?
Cheers

I don't think the EA81 is more powerful than the EA82 - if they weren't the same to start with (but I'm pretty sure the EA82 had *slighty* more kw than the EA81).

The EA81 would be a great setup in an L I reckon - at least you couldn't possibly throw a cam belt while offroading

This is just from the top of my head, so I could be wrong, but it is something like this:

EA81 - 59kW
EA82 - 66kw with leaded petrol (So 1985)
EA82 - 61kw with unleaded petrol

Not really that much difference (All carb models of course!).

Fitting the EA81 could be a lot less problematic for almost the same power.

I thought it was 63kw in all EA82 carby models?
EFI EA82 was 70kw?
Turbo EA82 was 83kw?

EA81 81kw?

yeah i didnt put the motor in for more power , i wanted to be able to adjust the tappets and have a bulletproof motor for off roading (less things that can break) . the motor has enough power to drive my 28" tyres atm. its just a much easier motor allround to work on. i changed the dist. to a electronic 2wd ea82 one to get rid of the points and allow me to run the Lseries wiring. id say its a good conversion if you have a ea81 laying around and a shot ea82. emissions might be a prob with the rta tho.

ea81 Lseries , yeah thats right a Lseries with out the tick tick tick
