EA82 Noisy Lifters

Post by Psymon » Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:34 pm

My EA82 has come down with a case of the common noisy lifters which i'd like to sort out. I've only owned the car for about a week and i was told when i bought it that it had a lifter noise that comes and goes. But as of today it seems to have become more permanent. I threw in a bottle of lifter free today but to no avail!

I've done a search regarding the problem, but i just want to confirm a few things.

1. I plan on giving it a good service and going over this weekend and i'm going to change the oil and filter in the hope of it helping the noise a little. What oil should i use? I've heard some people recommend a thinner oil, say around a 10w30 or 10w40... and some recommend a thicker oil?

2. I've read that changing the oil pump seals can help. How big of a job is this? I'm taking a guess that it's going to involve taking the timing belts etc off?

3. If all else fails will replacing the complete set of lifters sort it out and for how long? How much per lifter should i be paying, and is it an engine out job?

Thanks guys
Simon

thicker oil helps stop the noise. Been there done that lol. THe nulon lifter free up and tune works to a small extent.

To be honest its not worth spending money on any EA82, ive spent hundreds on my old one and ended up throwing it away anyway! They are an awesome super strong motor tho.

Id recommend sumthing like penrite HPR40 or preferably HPR50. The motor will love you for it.

I hope to god the oil change tomorrow helps it! I know it's not worth spending money on the engine but the ticking is driving me nuts!

And that's when the good stereo comes into the equation... Up the volume!

My lifters started complaining the day I drove to melbourne to pick up an EJ that will hopefully end up replacing the EA, I kid you not! They complained very noisily for two weeks without letting up. Dunno why it happened but I didn't do anything to aleviate the problem and it went away - same as now I'll get one or two noisy lifters and you just have to put up with it til they sort themselves out...

Yeah they've eased up again today which is good! As for a stereo... there isn't much the two stock front speakers can drown out!

That's where the aftermarket stereo comes into play  In my case a pioneer head unit with 3 way speakers up front and 4 ways in the rear, all 6 inch. Nothing special but it "replaces" noises I don't want to hear...

Cheers

how bad is the lifter noise mate?, my 92 ea82 had the occasional tappet noise added nulon tappet stuff and it dissapeared.... just like magic. Few weeks later sent dad to work with the wagon and it comes home banging and clanking like crazy...... the oil pump stopped working :(, and as there was no oil going through the motor the shims on the big end are now stuffed:mad: ........... so check if ur oil pump is giving pressure

If you want to fix the problem remove the rocker cover and at the end of the rocker shaft there should be a small orofice this usually blockes up and the air cant bleed out of the shaft and goes through the lifters you can go through heaps of lifters if you dont unblock the hole the noise will keep going .
An engine oil flush can be great some times but some times it will loosen carbon and block the bleed hole . Mouse
