gearbox ratios dual range?

hey,
im trying to find out what the ratios are in my gearbox in order to get another one from the wreckers.
search is not being my friend.
the information i have on it is.
engine is ea82
selector is hydraulic and on top of the casing
out of a 91 l-series.
the wreckers told me i need to know if it is a 3.7 3.9 or 4.1 ratio.
any help appreciated cheers.

Easiest way is to look at the sticker on the back of the rear diff. It will say either 3.7 or 3.9 (did L series have a 4.1 option?). The gearbox ratio will match that diff ratio.

I tried writing all the serial numbers i could find on the gearbox into google to no avail

The cheapest price i've gotten so far from a wreckers is $440 and the dearest is $550, i think that's crazy.

Can you expand on this? Is this the clutch actuator you are talking about? Like a master and slave cylinder?

thats expensive for 2nd hand box, we can get them from 88 to 137 bucks down here.

U-pull it Lonsdale used to do them for $188... Might still (although prices have been increasing lately obviously.)

Its a bit of a chance if its good or not. Try to get one from a low mileage L, also feel the shifter for play. In the L series the play in the shifter is normally the wear in the box not like the older boxes which was just a shifter linkage flop.

It could be the single range model - they have a big vacuum diaphram on the passenger's side of the gearbox that is used to engage the rear end where the centre diff is in the L AWD lockable centre diff units.

If your mate has a button on the top of his gearstick (and only has one gear selector on the console) then his L is a single range gearbox. Not easy to come by and not the best option for some offroading fun - for that he'll need the dual range gearbox and gear selectors. He'll also need the prop shaft, at least the first half of it anyway.

Cheers for all the help.

The gearbox is 3.7

I'll start my story from the top.

4WD worked fine for ages.
4WD stopped working, everytime i engaged it the whole car would shudder and the wheels would skid and make really bad sounds.
Tried engaging several more times over the course of a few months, same thing.
Basically had no fun with the car for around a year.
I got sick of not being able to do any 4WDing, started chasing up gearboxes.
Gearboxes expensive, decide to get a second opinion and make sure it was the gearbox and not the rear diff before i spent any moneys.
Got my girlfriends sisters boyfriend to help me work out what it could be and what gearbox, ratios and the difficulty of the job.
Decided to take him for a drive and engage in 4WD drive to show him first hand what was happening.
4WD WORKED FINE.
He said he was good at scaring things into working and he was right.
I was so ecstatic that it worked again, i had driven around with a car that bared the 4WD sticker but was stuck in poxy FWD for so long and then it finally just worked.
Went to Deep Creek Conservation Park on the weekend and did both of the 4WD tracks there and nailed them.

is that push button 4WD (the button you press on the top of the Gearstick) or has low and high range? Just curious what box it was....

its the dual range one. with the lever under the gearstick.
