4.111 swap with a 3.9 ea82 5 speed dual range?

Post by Zap » Sun Mar 22, 2009 7:54 am

Can it be done? I searched, came up with nothing on it. A buddy says he read about it here. Write up available maybe?
The 4.111 trans I have is out of an early legacy, @1992.

I've got a matching 4.111 rear diff. I've also got a 3.7 clutch type lsd. I do know how to swap those.
My hatch will love me after that.

Thanks.

My hatch (well they'fe both mine, but I'm talking about the one on the left) that will get the swap.

G'day Zap,

If you're talking about swapping the EJ internals for the EA internals I'm not sure you can do it with the 4.11 diff... I'm also guessing you have an EA81 that you want to run this gearbox?

As for the fitting of the EJ gearbox, you can do it, would probabily have to fit the adaptor plate in the reverse to how its normally done but that shouldn't prove any problems. You may need to make a custom cross member but the gearbox should go in without any problems, same for the rear diff. The prop shaft will most likely need to be modified or fab up a new one.

If you don't have an EJ under the bonnet you'd probabily make the most of the new gearbox with one fitted... This will avoid the adaptor plate ;)

Cheers

AWD front diff pinions are different to part time 4WD pinions so EJ's dont interchange with EA's unless they are the AWD type .

Gee tells me that you can cut and shut pinion gears and shafts but an exy process not inc removal and gutting of gearboxes .

If the adapter plates work and align everything properly using the EJ trans would be easier .

Cheers A .

Appreciated. But. The ej trans is a single range 4.111. That won't help me off road. . .

Thanks though for the imput guys.
