L series tailshafts

Post by PeeJay » Sun Jan 11, 2009 6:17 pm

Is it possible to fix these? I've got one with a loose uni joint and a dodgy bearing that will soon need replacing.

In my area no one would replace the uni joints on 'L' series, litigation I guess, try Sun Spares Qld. Their good. You may be able to get a replacement uni with an inner C clip and then grind the old one out, usually the front, but I'd go s/h.

I've heard you can replace the uni joints - you need to take it to a shop to do it. I think its the WA boys that have done this.

A driveshaft shop will replace it for you, normally by putting in a new yoke and uni, but if you need to do more than 2 uni's it usually works out cheaper to get a whole new shaft built.

Hmmm... I've changed the uni joints on an MY shaft before so maybe it's time to convert to a 1 piece shaft.

You can do it but there is a trick - ive done it before but i cannot remember. If you're unsure take it to the shop, be aware make sure you put the tailshaft in right side, if you invert, it can upset the balance.

You basically need the unis back and front from an early Datsun , 5 spd Bluebird Ser 1/2/3 use the same type of gearbox slip joint and the spider is replacable .
Having a Nissan R160 rear diff also means a rear uni from a 1600/180B and they have replacable spiders/bearing cups as well .

By invert I guess you mean the center bearings "hoop" .
I may be guilty of this one , if its inverted does it move the bearing higher or lower than in the correct position ?

Cheers A .

I have replaced a similar staked uni joint in the steering shaft in my Brumby. Found a un to match size wise and just tack welded the little thing in place. I would not try a tailshaft uni for balance purposes unless desperate.

Any decent tailshaft/driveshaft place can replace the "non-replaceable" subaru joints with a "replaceable" type.
