Thank you chubby37. I will try using a longer "breaker bar"

It stands to reason if the engine turns clockwise, the "main" bolt will turn anti-clockwise to undo.

Just checking before I bring in the big guns!!!!!!

I must say the bolt is effing tight:mad:

Disconnect igniter power lead, put breaker bar on bolt with handle end resting on the chassis rail of the car and tap the starter. Car won't start but will crack the bolt.

Shouldn't be too tight - I recollect 75 ft/lb is the torque setting(try doing a mini box spigot bolt @ 200ft/lb!!!). The previouos owner may have put loctite on it so is difficult to remove. They also could have a large silverback gorilla they use to tighten the bolts up(BMC had the MOWOG logo stamped on a lot of their parts - rumour has it that this was the name of the aforementioned gorilla that did all the bolts and nuts up wayyyyyy too tight)

Good luck - breaker bars are your friend - up there with FBH's

breaker bar- possible extension for your breaker bar then hit it with a big hammer on the end. should do the trick. same to tighten

thanks for all the advice. Finaly had to stop the engine turning by putting a bar into the drive plate bolt holes, and used a 3 foot "extension" on my breaker bar. Did the trick, but I was a bit worried for a while there!
