Hi all , in the past MY RX-T has run mineral oil because I couldn't see the sense in running expensive synthetic oil in an old engine that's getting replaced eventually .

I remembered that I had 5 liters of Mobil 1 5W50 that had been used for ~ 50 km in another engine and removed to use a different grade .
I thought since the current engine needed a change I'd pour it in and see how it went .
Good proper synthetic oils pour much more freely at ambient temperatures than most dinosaur (dino) oils and it really shows up at cold engine start , wants to "idle" at noticably higher revs than before - cold start idle air bypass valve settings would be set for dino oils with their higher when cold oil sheer drag .

I wondered if the hydraulic lifter rattle noise would reduce at idle but I think it's pretty much the same .
Something I have noticed is that I think this engine warms up a little faster than before and the water temperature seems a little more even , I'd like to think that it drains back to the sump a little faster than the dino oil so its cooling abilities may be a little better .
"Ellies" nearly 278K engine has a few issues with warmer weather and cooling and I put this down to poor ring sealing and lots of blowby going back into the inlet system via the crank case breather system .

We are supposed to be getting a couple of hot days Thursday Friday this week and that will be a good test to see if the higher tech oil is helping keep the lil doer alive long enough to get the next donk in .

I really have to find the time to get a filter head adapter and plumb in the Twin Cam Corolla oil cooler I got from the wreckers , I think that would make a big difference to my cars cooling abilities .

I have tried the Shell 5/40 synthetic on the EA82T but found it a little thin in hot weather, in the EJ20T the oil was fine. I have been running Magnatec in it with not worries. As a side note, been running the Magnatec in the EA and changing it every 5000km for about 2 years and there was no varnish build up on the heads when i had the motor pulled down. This was the first time i had had the sump off this engie and there was build up around the bottom end but no where near what i thought.

I had run the shell synthetic in a EA82T also, think it might have run smoother, all i recall is i got the shits with it leaking out of seals in 2 or 3 places, so didn't stick with it.

Switching between a mineral and synthetic (in that order) will most likely end in a leak.

If the seals do their job there's no reason why either type should leak .
My engine has minor leaks but it's no great concern to me - just a little messy .

If your car leaks after switching to synthetic, you had sludge and sh!t inside the motor sealing the seals.
