RX DR 5Sp - Lib Flywheel conversion

Have been hunting around for a decent clutch for my RX to no avail. Spoke to Exedy who were going to do up an organic solid centre plate but told me that they have had probs with high HP EA82T's & recommended a liberty flywheel conversion due to the lack of surface area.
Has anyone had any experience with the conversion or can put me onto someone that know's about these particular clutches. The normal performance clutches/brass buttons dont hold up as the engine is putting out around 340hp at the crank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have to assume your box is an AWD one or it would be interesting getting that sort of power down to the wheels 8O

If this is the EA82 gearbox, I would be a little concerned about long term longevity with that much HP getting thrown at it. I sort of look at the clutch as the weak link that gives a little before you bust the box.

I understand a lot of WRX guys do all the work on the engine and neglect the box, eventually upgrade the clutch to stop it slipping, then blow up the gearbox.

If it is the liberty box, a different story all together?

I think steve and some of the other guys who have a lot more experience with interesting Eng / Box combo's can probably offer a much more educated opinion :)

I only expect 4-6 months out of my gearboxes. This will be number 7 going in the car this time. I've never had problems getting my clutches through Global Auto Spares who I used to take in my old one & they would supply me a brass button solid centre clutch for $320. Now they dont seem to have any idea about what I'm talking about for some reason. Has been about 18 months since I've deal with them.

As for the double diaphram, I've never heard of that. What is involved & how does it work?

I had one made up using two standard diaphrams on one pressure plate.
You need to convert to hydraulics and still use brass buttons. This was the one clutch that held on a high output EA82t with AWD. You do end up with a very thick left leg.

Can't be any worse than an old Landrover clutch, can it ? :D

Will keep that in mind but am going to be selling the car soonish so trying to get something that will just bolt up to get me out of trouble for a little bit. Looks like I'm just going to take out the current clutch & take it into a specialist to see if they can match it up...

That red MY sedan I had. It was much harder than the old Landies I worked on

From memory that wasn't any worse than an L with the hill holder still hooked up ..

I did manage to get it to slip a few times in 1st / 2nd but only when the clutch was still cold and running over 18 PSI. It certainly had the grin factor, I wonder where the engine and the brumby have ended up .. :(

Direct Clutch Services in Albion are making me up a double diaphram setup, should be here on Wednesday. I mentioned the conversion to hydraulic & they said it's not required.
Will have to see how it goes once I get it all in on the weekend.

$350 for diaphram, plate & bearing kit.
Is cheap enough, lets hope it holds!
