Hi all,

Mate just bought an '83 MY wagon, gearbox was meant to be recently replaced/fixed by someone who should have known what they're doing (they're hopefully fixing it so not naming names) but problem is as follows...

initially - when in 2nd, and engine braking (i.e. accelleraterix not applied) quite loud high pitched whirring sound would result (like metal on metal maybe???)

now - 3rd gear pops out and whirring getting worse

wanting to know whats exactly going on (and what could have been done wrong in the gearbox overhaul) before we take it back to get fixed.

All help greatly appreciated.

Probably excessive cluster endfloat, I'd be putting it on a trailer to take back for warranty repair.

Got oil in the box?

A mate of mine on some "good advice" tried his own oil change. He drained the oil, changed the filter and filled it back up again.

About 400 km later and running very poorly the gearbox seized. He had drained the oil from the gearbox and added a heap of oil to the motor...

If the gearbox was overhauled it shouldn't be showing any signs of gear popping or whining sounds.

The diff may not have been matted up to the pinion gear properly, this could cause the noise your hearing but i'd imagine that you'd hear it all the time instead of just when slowing down (engine braking).

Good luck
