Could someone please suggest how to remove and replace spark plugs from a 1995 2.5 lt Outback? Is there a special tool required as the space is tight?

Thankyou Frog, but my question should have been, how to remove the HT lead from plug without damage as there is very little room to get hands down and grip it.

just normal spark plug socket will do
some times the tool kit in the back has one in it

i have the 97 OB and i use a 3/8 drive socket short extension and ratchet. the trick i find is to make sure you put the 5/8 plug socket (if your socket has the rubber insert inside it take it out and throw it away because all it will do is break the plugs on you) on the plug first then with the extension on the ratchet put it into the socket. an important thing here is don't push the extension all the way into the socket as it becomes very hard to remove later;).

also do all this from under the car. i run it up ramps but if you don't have them use safety stands. (don't get under with just a jack.)

there is good room from the underside to get your hands in onto the plugs so i always screw them in by hand to avoid getting them cross threaded.
It should take about 15 minutes for all 4 to be done.

The biggest problem when it comes to spark plug failure is the hot engine. When it's failing inside, just make sure that when replacing spark plugs, nothing falls into the hole the spark plug is threaded into. Use compressed air to blow away dirt and debris right before you remove an old plug and spark plug wires..
