I had a similar issue with my Brumby when I bought it.

I did three things trying to fix it

1 - Changed the spark plug leads - still did it
2 - Changed the fuel filters - still did it
3 - Took out the vacum advance unit and tested it (it was rooted) so sent it off to get re-conditioned - put it back on and no dramas since (touch wood).

I would also check the condition of your distributor points (if it has them) and your timing.

Take off the dizzy cap, unscrew the VAU and disconnect the bottom hose, take it off - put your finger on the end that went into the dizzy - suck on the other end - if you can't get a vacum then the diapram is perished and needs to be replaced.

cheers but i really think its in the gearbox as it feels a little bit like sliping but not clutch

the way to test the clutch is put the car into top gear and rev the engine to about 2000rpm. then release the clutch fast. if the clutch is in good condition the engine will stall instantly if the engine slowly dies the clutch is on the way out.

it dosn't sound like a clutch problem to me though.

no i dont think its clutch at all

Well if it's losing power it can either be the clutch slipping or the motor.

Check to see if you have any short wires. I had one that when ever it shorted the car would struggle but not stall. Maybe going up hill makes it contact?

Me thinks you need to get your carby needs sevicing cleaning out including the main jets and Float levels. The poor thing sounds like its running out of fuel.

its got a weber on it and has been jetted 2 months ago by carbytune, but i has to be engine now as it was doing it at idle today, almost feels like a spun engine bearing ( could it be that)

my next option is to go for a ej22 or er27 convertion

Spun bearings normally cause a knocking noise or the motor is tight to turn over. Have you checked valve clearences? In my old Brumby I had the valve clearence close up just enough to make it miss. It would run Fine when Cold but when it warmed up you could hear it coming and going when cruising. Thought that was an ignition miss to start with then tried fuel then checked valve clearences. Not Hard to check. I used to check them everytime i did a service after that. Could do them in a bout 20 mins after a few goes.

You will need to get a set of feeler gauges. Cant remember exact but in the realm of 22thou for intake and 18thou for exhaust(I would be checkin out a manual its been over 12 months since i have done them)(Sold that one 9 months ago and still miss it). You need to remove rockercovers get a set new rocker cover gaskets. Wind motor over untill TDC compresion stroke on Cylinder you are checking clearences, Adjust rocker arms so that you can slide the gauges in and out fairly easly without movement on and off the gauge with rocker arm. Continue for all four cylinders replace rocker covers clean up etc.
Would Recommend getting a manual to do the for the first time. Just loan one from your local libary(They are free!) then you should be right.

It's extremely unlikely to be a gearbox issue.
