I have set up mine a few times and obviously had to reset it when i changed my throttle body for the SC.
Yes u do need feeler gauges. I seriously think you should invest in the liberty Gregories workshop manual Matt. Most of the things u ask in here are clearly outlined in there. It will save you stacks of time.
If there is a problem with it it should spit a code. This goe for your O2 sensor too. Although i have had my O2 sensor play up with no code before.

i dont think theres an actual 'problem' iwth it..i jsut think its not set right. causing my car to run rich, and surge and be annoying to me.
so the Gregories manual is way better than the Haynes book i kept frm wheni dad had his Outback?

more likely to be o2 sensor for surging. Or problem with your fuel return. Mine used to surge BIG TIME... turned out fuel was making it's way back up my evap lines and flooding the motor. Might be worth blocking off the evap line and go for a 30 min drive just to rule it out.

Surging can be known for MAP sensor that is dirty...

Ohh yeah... that too. I always cleaned my MAF meter with some circuit board cleaner.

the surging is only there when the throttle is partially on. at WOT it runs alright. but still rich.
makes me think the TPS is telling the motor the butterfly is opened more thna it is and so more fuel gets injected and causes surging.
i only jsut got home so in a bit ill go check out the TPS.
ive cleaned the MAF sensor before but maybe ill do it again
O2 sensor will be next coz i liek to know i got new stuff

If it was the Throttle Position sensor not set right you would get a code for the idle switch which is built into the Throttle Position sensor. My opinion... if your not getting a TPS or Idle switch code then thats not your problem.
Try it and see how u go though.

Ive seen an explination on adjusting the TPS on an XT6.
With the engine running, slowly rotate the TPS until the engine stalls, then turn it back a touch. It was something like that anyway.

That wont for for an EJ22 beacause it has the idle switch in it. This lets the ECU know it should be idleing. I would think the XT6 would not have this.
