Filler on paint?

Put a ding in my tailgate the other night. I managed to get it rather straight with a hammer but I want to stick some filler on it. I've sanded back any flaking paint, but can I just prime the bare metal and paint work the fill over all of it?

Yeah the filler will hold onto paint aswell as bare metal. It may be worth roughening the surface and drilling a few small holes to give the filler something better to grab into.

Generally speaking filler should be applied to bare metal only.If the dent is only shallow you may be able to get away with it,but you may have problems when you try to feather back the edges as you will have paint between the metal and the filler.I guess it depends on how good a job you want.

Nah its like a tiny dent now I've banged it out, just want to smooth a crinkle. I just primed the bare metal spots and will put some filler over it tomorrow. Not looking for an awesome job just want it to last a couple years until I can get the whole car painted.

You can put filler on the top, if I were ya i would make the area really rough so that the filler will stick on nicely.

For the alliteration of the Ps... and lamborghini's I think look better purple then p p.. pink. And I agree with Alpine, make it rough and do it well, it probably want last till you have the paint job if ya just slap it on...

I agree, make shour it is VERY rough and make it bigger then the dent, you will find that it is bigger then it looks, Filler (bogg) is NOT water tight, water will and can get throw, under, around it and then you will have *RUST* under the Bogg and you dont wont that.
You mite think it is a little dent now but to fix it up right and having it looking good you will have to repair a much bigger area.
Bogg dose bond best ot bare metal so if you can have some bare metal at lest at the center of the dent at its deepest point, try not to drill holes as this allso will start RUST from both sides.
Hope this been some help to you.
