Hi guys, My clutch pedal and clutch cable assembly has given up the ghost and I'm baffled as to wtf could have gone wrong.

basically the pedal suddenly went soft and eventually the clutch could not even be disengaged with the pedal because the cable wasn't pulling the bracket that disengages the clutch back far enough to work. I tried to re adjust the cable at the gearbox side but there was no more thread for adjusting.

As a result of stepping on the clutch pedal in and out repeatedly to try and figure out what went wrong, I heard a crack sound (like something had broken or popped off) and the pedal now does not spring back to position.

This is how the end of the cable at the gearbox side sits when the clutch pedal is at normal position:


This is how the afore-mentioned assembly sits when I push the pedal in:


^^ as you can see, even with the pedal pushed in, the other end of the cable isn't even pulling back far enough to pull that teal coloured bracket back to disengage the clutch.

I don't think the clutch cable has snapped because there is movement of the pedal when I pull and push this end ^^^ of the cable.

im no exbert but i might say that the clutch fork may ave snapped on the pivot point inside the GBOX

is the clutch std or is it heavy duty

either that or somethin has gone wrong with the pedal box like maybe the spring has now snapped that would be y it doesnt spring bak

I just replaced the clutch not even a month ago with a standard duty Excedy item. I hope the fork pivot point did not snap inside the gearbox cos that'd be the gheyest thing right now I had another look before at the pedal box and I can't see anywhere where a spring could have mounted to the pedal? yeah, something can collapse in the pdal box itself. Mine did and needed pull out, strengthening and welded up, but it did not go the floor. Maybe pull the seat out and get in there a bit more to inspect the pedals arrangement. Hope it is not in the bellhousing...

think the spring is on shaft that pedal swings on. hey, we are in here at same time !!

can u move the clutch fork (Teal bracket coming out of gbox) at all when the cable isnt pulling on it (ie when its not pulling on it)

does seem like its the clutch fork.

i have seen one clutch box that started bending but thats coz it needed a new pressure plate as it was badly worn down and the pedal got very hard to push.

yeh the clutch fork can still be moved around a good 2-3cm's back (without the spring attached) without drama's and no strange noises or movements there. The spring attached (as seen in pics) to the fork pulls the fork back to place, does this spring also cause the pedal to spring back to place? I seriously hope it isn't the fork, it was perfectly fine in the morning and then when I went to drive it again in the arvo the pedal just went soft as, could the clutch cable have stretched?

nah didnt think clutch cables culd stretch liek that much especially in one go maybe over time theyll stretch but not instantly
ill load up a pic of how it shuld look pedal not pressed in bout 5 mins

the forks seem abotu the same position and springs on same tension (by looking)
so it seems liek the pedal box or the cable


Edit-quick fix might be to bend the braket back far anough so that when the pedal is pressed it will move the fork
but u mentioned the fork moving 3cm suggests there may be a problem with that :s mine doesnt move at all without the force of the pedal on it

I took the spring and the clutch cable off the fork and I was able to move it about 1-1.5cm, the estimated 3cm wasn't measured and was just a rough guestimate Thank you Matatak for going to all that trouble for me, I appreciate your help buddy

I had the same happen to mine, turned out to be a slowly breaking clutch cable which eventually snapped. The clutch pedal is held in by a circlip. If you remove this and the washer behind it the pedal will slide off and you can remove it and the clutch cable together. I took the cable to a rope and chain place and they just replaced the cable in my old inner. Works fine now.

I had the clutch fork break on my Liberty as it is using a very heavy duty pressure plate to handle the Turbo EJ. The pivot point split on the fork. Had to slide the gearbox back far enough to replace with another fork. Seems to be coping OK now.

yeah, rings a bell, as strands break off the cable gets longer. There is two cables for the MY. I could only get the early model cable aftermarket at the time but it was adaptable in the end.

well if it isnt gonna be the cable then maybe pressure plate figners are breaking

thanks guys! I don't think its clutch related as I changed the clutch less than 2 months ago. I'm starting to think its clutch cable related as well, it's still not fixed so i'll probably replace the clutch cable tomorrow

pulled out the clutch cable yesterday. I stepped on one end of it and pulled on the other and what do you know? it was frayed and rusted on the inside.
