EA82 Running hot & varing temperatures
EA82 Running hot & varing temperatures
EA82 carby motor in brothers car seems to be running hot.. goes just under the red, and goes down, and up and down and up slowly..
it is running hotter than it should be.. there is no signs of blown head gaskets, changed thermostat, and kept an eye on everything but it still runs hot and up and down in the temperature range.
Thermo fans are all woking well and are kicking in at appropriate temp's so what to look at now?
Ordered a cooler thermostat for it this week...
any help would be good

Okay, to do fault finding if the rad's core is blocked/or failing.
Ensure the engine is cold before warming up, Remove any type of fans on the radiator (you'll be fine without them for little while).
Start-up the engine and run it for a while while inspecting & feeling all over the radiator bottom, top, middle, centre left right etc.. if you can feel "cold" patch and other area is "hot".
I think the L Series had vertical core radiators (been ages since I last touched it), you will feel a couple or a few lines that is cold and other areas is hot, its a sign of blocked core in these cores.
If you're still unsure, take it to RadReps at the end of Pako (Pakington Street, Newtown) Barwon River end off Fynes Street, these guys will be able to help you.
Also, its a good idea to remove the thermostat as well.
Cheers

Anyway back to topic - How hard? Shouldn't be, just undo the pipes, bolts and disconnect the fans (if any) and pull it out + change it over.
Get some pre-mix coolant but use normal water for testing purposes before coolant.
Geoff at Bursons in Mercer St, Geelong will give you a good trades price for pre-mix coolant I think $18? I can't remember

Ok heres the info... Took radiator out and replaced with another one i had in the shed. Temperature sat fine where it should sit. Took it for a drive (a good long one) was all good and the temperature didnt move off where it should be. The next day---- took it for another test drive and the temperature came up, right up to the hot! pulled over and it had blown a little water hose underneath the carby. So got it home and replaced the hose with a new one and also fitted a cooler thermostat (170 degrees).
Took it for another test drive and it went like a dream! temp was sitting fine and where it should be.
But--- This is now the 3rd hose it has blown
1st hose was big heater hose
2nd hose was a little one on the left side of carby
3rd hose was another little one on the right side of the carby.
Why is it blowing the hoses? the only reason i can think of is that the hoses were old and brittle and they did get pretty hot a few times when the old radiator was in so they cracked?
any suggestions?
Car is running 100% now
thanks
