Which side CV joint??

Post by SuBaRiNo » Thu Apr 05, 2007 4:33 pm

Has anyone worked out a technique to establish which CV joint needs replacing when you start to hear them...

My problem joint appears to be an inner CV... since there is no change in the noise when you turn corners... in fact if anything the noise goes away when you turn... it's only there during acceleration and it is impossible to determine which side it is coming from.

It is definately a CV... is this usually just a guessing game... change a CV and see if it fixes the problem?? Or is there some method i can use to determine which side joint needs attention.

Dave its sounding more like a wheel bearing if it goes away when you turning.

Are you sure its your cv’s I thought that you just change your front shafts a few months ago?

Sorry i only know the cure for the outers.
Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

DOJ (double offset joint) is the inner CV

I bought inferior quality cv's and i have had trouble with them from day one.

Mine clonk clonk clonk when accelerating hard, driving up a steep hill or when i have something really heavy in the boot, it is the DOJ worn where they are in the extended position.

I took it to a mechanic and he put it up on a hoist and got me start the engine and put it in gear, that way, with the wheels hanging and the doj's fully extended, we worked out what was causing that terrible clonk.

One side is newish but i forget which.

And no it's not a wheel bearing... i know what they sound like when they go... i also went out of my way to put hardcore wheel bearings in last time around. I also know what CV joints sound like when they go... and it's one of em.

Thanks for the input.

you should be able to tell at least left or right

if you just jack the car up enough to just have one front wheel off the ground and run the car in gear

only the wheel off the ground should be spinning, and you wind the steering wheel lock to lock listening for the clicking

if u cant hear it try the other side

Thanks for the pointer bluesteel... that should work seams when you jack the car up the CV angle gets worse so the CV noise should be worse.

Thanks
