EA82 MPFI Leone won't idle, backfires

Hi,
I recently purchased a 1989 Leone with an EA82 MPFI engine. The engine was running cool, so I decided to replace the thermostat. Since then, it won't idle and runs roughly at higher revs. It also backfires into the inlet manifold occasionally. Has anyone got any clues on where to start looking?
I removed the thermostat and it made no difference.

Sounds like a spark / timing issue?
Checked dizzy, leads and plugs? Also maybe coil

I just tried to start it again from cold and noticed a lot of gurgling sounds coming from the overflow bottle. The radiator also builds up a lot of pressure when cranking. I'm suspecting a cracked head.
