Metal plates on brake shoes (Liberty)

Hey just replaced my brake shoes on the liberty. The ones I removed had a few very thin plates wrapped arround each shoe. But the new shoes are a small fraction bigger so the plates would not fit on. Took the car out to bed in the shoes and all seems fine. What are these plates for and do they really need to be there?

I know its tough fitting in new shoes...The Lseries have those backing plates too, and i think are needed there, just trying to recall it...i think there they are part of how they clip in,
so if liberty is the same?..............

Yeah was actually making some rattle noise. Threw them back in there. Had to tap then in with a rubber mallet though as its a tight fit. All good now. PITA though. Why can't they be a bit more like the V8 Supercars, bang em in with pliers (hands if cold) in 10 sec flat.

They are anti rattle shims, designed to stop the pads rattling as you stated, at work we use a spray on type of glue to bond the pads to the caliper lightly, its just to stop the pads rattling no big issue
