fuel pump no good?

My ej L has a problem when left overnight.Upon start up it runs rough idles low and if you don't accelerate it'll stall,give a few revs and it might not stall.Leave it about 20 seconds fire it up and it runs fine.Once running alls good go for a drive leave it a couple of hours alls good.No check engine light or fault codes so guessing its got something to do with fuel.Also has a bit of a fuelly smell.Any ideas?

mine does exactly the same mate.
im guessing fuel pressure reg, or ****y IAC valve. its been doing it for years i jsut give it a quick rev when i start it and its fine
mine wont stall but it idles at about 400rpm until i tap the revs then its fine.
we need to get to the bottom of this one

yea probably the pump its usualy what hold pressure
mazda 6 had big problems with it when they first came out and we had a few libertys do it a few months back

my car was doin that -but a bit worse ud have to start driving it till it gets warm so it stops idling low.
had the ecu tuned. its a lot better now.

Conrct a pressure guage to your in line just near the manifold and run the car for a min or so then tur it off and check your hold pressure, if its less than about 45psi after 5 min there is a problem

Could be the non return valve on the top of the pump?

yea thats the part on all the cars i work on its part of the pump thus have to replace teh whole pump assembly not sure on the L series tho

What fuel pump have you got Will? What is your wiring loom? Stripped down? Is the blue wire with red trace connected to give the computer start sequence?
Next cold start turn your key to on and wait for the pump to prime and then stop, then turn it off and then do it again. Then try and start it. That will let you know if you are down on or losing fuel pressure or not.

Also consider fitting a second check valve between the pump and motor, this should tell you if its dropping rail pressure too.

L series ,looms all good its only just started to do it.
Ive tried ign on and prime of the pump ,on off 3 times, and it still did it so i guess i'm losing pressure somewhere.Probably should replace all the hoses and filter and clamps still got the original L ones which have done over 400 000 km.
