is my car getting too hot?

Post by stinky » Sat Jan 13, 2007 3:38 pm

My ea81T brumby gets pretty warm. Normal driving the temp guage is about 1/4 and the Wolf3d shows between 70-85 degrees. Highway driving the temp guage gets to just under 1/2 and the Wolf3d shows a fairly steady 96degrees with spikes up to 100.

Yesterday I went up tamborine and by the time I got near the top my temp guage showed pretty much exactly 1/2 and the wolf3d was around 102 spiking up to around 106.

The wolf3d temps really worry me. I'm not really sure what temp it should be seeing before we're overheating, but I would think 100degrees is getting a bit too hot. The Wolf is getting it's info from a temp sensor in/on the engine, but I'm not 100% sure where the temp guage is getting it's from.

What do you guys reckon?

Oh my thermos turn on at 75 and back off again at 65.

the wolf needs to be calibrated to the temp sensor on the engine, so it may not be reading correctly, but up around 95-100 degrees is not too bad. Pushing my car pretty hard with my laptop datalogging i often read around 95-105 (which is not even noticeable on my standard temp guage as being higher than 90 degrees). I remember the wolf website used to have a lot of calibration data for the various sensors, maybe you could check if your temp sensor was there.

I always thought the OEM temp gauge sensor was the hexagonal brass fitting screwed into the right bottom corner of the radiator. Mine is easily seen just below and forward of the battery.

Isn't normal temp position the white horizontal mark just below halfway on the temp gauge?

On my L series gauge it shows max when the computer is saying 110 (I think).

The one in the radiator is the wax switch that controls the thermo's the actual temp sensor looks almost the same but it is in the thermostat housing.

Engine as std should run ~ 90-91 degrees...depends on thermostat(check it !)

Optimum cruise temp for power/performance is ~86(replace thermo stat with coolder to achieve this, and retune.....for modified engines !)

Running around all day 91-98 is perfectly fine, touch of just over 100 when getting belted is ok, but continued 102-105 etc etc is too hot.

Having your thermo`s switch off @ 65 is Way too low....65 is only just outside of cold run imo, 75 is even still too cold ! Factory would of had thermo switch on at 91, and off at ~86-88(usually a 3-4 degree window).

For a 4wd situation where you are fighting a insufficient cooling system a 86 degree thermostat and fan switch on around there may help a little.....but it would be a case of pushing shit up-hill if you think your going to solve overheating issues doing anything like that.

Most acurate point to measure water temp is the black rubber of the top rad hose with a IR temp gun.

What version Wolf (unit&software) are you guy`s using ?

I'm running the wolf3d... unsure about the rest, I bought it all done and never had to do anything on it.

Agree with OS, your running temp should be around 90deg fans on at 94 and off at 85 is how they normally run. With the AC on and driving on the highway my EA82T runs at 95 on a 36 degree day
