Liberty A/C issues

Looks like I have finally got on top of the A/C issues I was having a couple of months back. The original thread has gone but it goes a little something like this:
A/C is working only intermittently, feels like compressor is switching on even when there is no cool air coming out. Runs really well when it is working. Help!
Reply by Subi Wan Kenobi: TX valve
Reply by me: WTF is that?
Reply: Thermal Expansion valve
End of previous thread.
New additions:
Research: TX valve really hard to get to.
More Research: Local Auto A/C blokes say it needs regassing, so they add gas, put in foam filler between A/C condensor and Radiator becuase they say there should be a shround herer directing most air through both condensor & radiator and not let too much escape (I told him I had seen a lot of Libertys and none had this anyway...) $80. Tell me to come back if still have problems because it is probably the compressor, as it sounds bad.
Further testing: intermittent failure becomes increasingly failing, but discover works fine whenever I hold A/C button in.
Research: Talk to auto sparky, he suggests thermostat or switch or relay issue.
Investigation: I get around to pulling the control unit out, test switch and it seems to be dicky.
Next: now to get a new switch or new control unit as cheap as possible to check if my theory is correct...
Anyone got one?
