Heater core blow-out

Anyone had this happen to them?
Heard some "static" coming through the front speakers for a while now... turns out that it was actually a crack in the hose end of heater radiator core, my feet were getting very warm so i stuck a hand down there to check and that's when it clicked, the "static" was the hissing from the crack and before i could turn the car off it blew this hole in the side

A closer view

steam filled the car and poured out my open windows (40 degree day in vic today)... i called dad to come and pick me up, while i was waiting the CFA rocked up to see if all was good... I guess someone thought i was on fire, thankyou to them for their concern, it could have been a lot worse than it was.
I'm now looking at getting an all metal one made up from the old core if its up to it. When i got the car, part of the reason it was so cheap is that the other end was cracked and leaking water, we replaced the end with a metal one, but this has a few small leaks in it now...
So to keep me going i now have no heater core in the car... like i need it in this weather anyway...
Oh, about 3 months ago, my car blew out the side of the radiator in about the same spot on the calder near kyneton... i was 100m short of where i stopped last time... dad reckon's i like the spot
I'll see if i can dig up that part of the radiator and post a pic of it too.
I'd like to hear any problems others have had with this...
Cheers
