Air conditioning-Not turning on!

Post by Sideways Subaru » Wed Nov 29, 2006 7:45 am

Heya all,

For some time my air-con has been having trouble staying cold. I got it re-gassed yesterday but cant see a marked improvement and so i'm suspecting that there is something else wrong. The air-con does not seem to turn on when the button is pushed first go, and it takes a few pushes and about 5 minutes of driving for the air to go cold. Have narrowed it down to a problem with the compressor-it seems to turn itself off after running for about 5-10 secs. the manual indicates that the compressor automatically turns off if i its rotation goes below the rpm of the engine or something. Could there just be a problem with the clutch, or more liekly is the compressor cactus?

Cheers, Alex

as the manuak says if the idle is to low it will turn off could be a dodgy wire or something or a bugged pressure switch maybe???

You will need to replace your signal amplifier in the AC circuit the box is located above the AC evaporator unit behind the dash.

Thanx fellas,

have narrowed it down to something with the wiring as you said 89rsturbo, specifically the thermo fans-apparently they are supposed to turn on whenever the air-con is running. But for some reason they dont so now i will just have to manually turn them on with a switch on the dash. But it's all good for the moment. btw does anyone know how strong the flow of air should be from the vents when the air cons on full?

Cheers Alex
btw suby wan thanx for that info will also check that on the weekend

Its not awe-inspiring. My VZ Commodore causes a gale in the cabin - while the Subaru one is a breeze at best. I'd love to get a better fan to push more air. I have also noticed the drivers side vent in the middle seems to get more air than the passenger.
