Is this a fuel problem on my 1982 wagon ???

Everything runs well, except that on long drives there is a short session of missing/loss of power/the jerks, now it happens every 50 to 100km on the open road, lasts say 10 seconds and then it all runs well again. It has been occuring for about 8mths, that alone is not a real problem. The issue is that now we are driving often in Sydney it tries to do it when we are stopped at lights. Of course just as it goes Green ! Very frustrating.
The other day it did it and I pumped the foot a few times as the light had just gone green and I was in the right turn lane with an arrow. It did not work and it went bang in the carby with smoke coming out from under the bonnet momentarily and my partner freaking and talking about the fire extinguisher. It then picked up and was normal again.
OK, I assume these points, correct me if I am wrong.
1/ It is fuel system (otherwise it probably would not come good so fast and for so long).
2/ It may have something to do with some vapour forming in the fuel/carby system and then getting blown out eventually.
The engine runs fine in between bouts, with plenty of power.
I was thinking of ripping out the carby and working on that. if I do should I look anywhere in particular ?
Any suggestion appreciated !
Mick
