anyone know of any mechanic in a can product / oil that would have a positive effect on a gear box that has a slight whine?

you could try redline gear oil its pretty good...

The nulon gearbox goo addative is pretty good but loses it's effectiveness after a while.

bananas were once a diff additive, but they are pretty hard to come by...
