EA82T idling too high.

The new motor (EA82T) in the wagon is idling far too high. When cold it's at 2000 rpm+, and once warm, 1000 - 1200 rpm.
Have checked timing, backed idle screw right off, ensured throttle cable isn't too tight, made sure no vacum leaks and even pulled off intake tube to ensure throttle butterfly closes completely. Cannot make it idle any lower .......
Starting to p*** me off
Any ideas?

i'm sure this was discussed before...but the main culprit is usually the air valve that sits over the thermostat housing...
they get stuck, so requires disassembling and cleaning it.
note theres a electric heater in there as well to speed up the action.

Thanks Fred, I'll check that out.
I talked to previous owner today (thanks for the call Mick) and the mixture screw on the throttle body behind the butterfly was discussed. Fiddled with this and certainly got the idle down - however it is running a bit rich now (can smell it) and a bit rough. Will play with this more to find correct compromise.
Don't know if this caused next problem and will post new topic on this soon. I took the car for a bit of a longer drive and it has a massive flat spot. Will detail symptoms in new post.
MPFI Turbo?

Hey Willie,
Just wondering if your car runs a carbie turbo or a Mutli Point Fuel Injection Turbo?
I ask cos my L's got the N/A MPFI and when cold idles at about 2000 rmp then once warm drops between 1200 and 1500 rpm. But you talked of a mixture screw which made me think you've got a carbie job. I've done all the same things you have, backed off the idle screw, checked for vacuum leaks [i had a few but didn't change anything

]
Maybe we both have the same problem on different fuel delivery systems.
Cheers

Bennie,
I have MPFI - I'm pretty sure all Turbos were MPFI (to the best of my knowledge)
I think it's a mixture screw - small recessed brass screw just behind and to the left (as you look from the front of the car) of the throttle tube.

Willie, did you see this previous thread?? See my pics and prevoius comments, this will help you.

No its not the mixture screw, but the idle screw (vertical behind). One found horizontal adjacent is for high idle (AC). Dont mess with the throttle adjustment set screw on the throttle cable close off position, this is critical for correct throttle body switch positioning.

Yes, been very busy lately. Get back to Darwin tonight at midnight, after being in Sydney last two weeks. Two weeks at home, then off to Canungra (SEQld) for 6 weeks - not looking forward to that!
Will pick car up from local performance workshop, who have told me the problems are fixed! I'll let everyone know once I've picked it up and taken for a spin. Apparently it was the fuel pressure regulator - OK at idle and not on boost, however under boost would not work properly. I think Steve from Rising Sun thought this was the problem - knows his stuff, our Steve.
At Qantas club at present, about to hop on plane. Will post again when I get a chance.
Cheers for now.

How is your rig going willie? I will have to venture around soon, I have said it a million times now and never made it. went to shannons car show and saw your beast there, very tidy. Wish I took the ute. Have you heard much more on the subaru club starting up?

Car is going alot better now - still not perfect, though!
I'm off to Canungra next week, leaving early Thursday (28th). Won't be back until 15 Nov.
If I get time this weekend, I will put diff hanger and airbox in, and try to get it running a bit smoother.
Lifter noise is still there!
Having been away a fair bit lately, I have not heard any more on Darwin Subaru Club. They post info on MRT's website in the forum section under Northern Territory. Worth cheking every now and then.
Only good thing about going to Canungra for this course is that I might get to the BYB BBQ. However will have the Galant, not a Subaru, so I'll have to sneak around in the background.

I go to brissy in a few weeks to instruct on a course for a week, so im definetly back at work after my months off! not much really done to the ute ,there is a few issues I have to look into with a bit of lifter noise aswell. You have been working your arse off lately, must be sick of going away at the moment. If you get the time to work on the car this weekend I might pop out to meet you finally. PM me if you get the chance and Ill give you a call.
