Engine smokes... sometimes...

Im refering to an ej22 motor here... what could cause it to blow smoke badly sometimes and not other times??

Some days im convinced i need an engine rebuild and the next it seams to be fine. Smoke is greyish.... gets much much worse as i raise the RPM... and the engine does seam to use a bit of oil, but i also have several oil leaks contributing to that.

Engine temperature does not seam to effect the amount of smoke.

Any ideas or suggestions??

Dave, i was told this before buying cars....fully warm up the engine for 10 mins, the floor it. If it blows smoke, its rings. If it blows smoke at cold start up and generally goes away when it warms, it valve guide seals.
Hope this helps - Roger

If the motor has been neglected it could be the PCV valve in the manifold , but a mate had similar problems with his a while back and it ended up being rings
