Drove home tonight and just as I was getting home all the dash lights on the Brumby came on and the engine cut out. I started it again and the dash lights came on again and she died again. Possibly and alternator problem I thing but any suggestions would be appreciated.

My old man told me of a neat trick for diagnosing alternator problems which is to set the radio to am frequency and i think it has to be in the low spectrum while the cars running. Then simply rev the engine and you should be able to hear the alternator arcing if the brushes are worn or so on, im sure someone else can clarify how it works but i thought its a neat trick.

Fusible link ?

the dash lights always come on when engine dies and ign still on.

might be a heap of things such as fuel supply, idle circuit, scunged fuel filters .....

I'm with steptoe on this - check your fusible links first! Give each one a gentle tug, if one breaks or falls apart there's your issue.

Then check the alternator out if the links are good. Or swap it for a known good alternator and see how you go.

OK guys time for an update. Put a Multimeter onto the battery with the engine switched off and it read 12.6v. Started the engine and again checked the voltage which read 14.6v. This leads me to believe that the alternator is working correctly. Just need to check a few more things now as to what is going on.

From memory, there is something called (don't quote me on it) a revolution counter that runs off the coil. This thing shuts the fuel pump off if it doesn't get the correct signal. Check that the fuel pump is running and not cutting out on you after the car has started. I had this happen and just can't remember where this little fuel pump relay thingy is. Might pay to grab a copy of the workshop manual and suss it out??

I believe this little black box is on the firewall above the fuse box - you can see it if you remove the little coin box thing above the driver's leg ;)
