i just bought a 1987 L series manual and it had a bit of work to do with it including a tank of contaminated fuel so i have dealt with all that fine only to find out i can start and idle fine but as soon as i put my foot half way to the floor it dies in the arse so i was looking for some idea's on how to get it sorted out with out pulling out the carby .. the fuel is flowing and i have changed the filters and the pump just getting no glory also just want to know if anyone can tell me if the back butterfly is mechanical or it works on pressure ?

Im guessing you mean the secondary throat of the carburettor?
Its vacuum controlled, but if you pull the throttle cable and snap the throttle open quickly and let it build revs to redline, if you are quick you should see it start to open, just before you have to let the throttle go to stop it over revving

G'day, if it has had a dose of water in the fuel you can try a bottle of methylated spirits in the tank. That will allow the water to dissolve and burn with the fuel. If the fuel is dirt contaminated, you have to pull the carb apart and blow it out- there is no other way.

cheers .. for the info .. it had water in the tank as far as i know and metho was put in it well i will just try and keep you posted as i will have alot of work to do today trying to sort it out .. just a pain how the carby bolts are in a place i will need to get a crows foot

ok after all this i found out the second butterfly valve wasnt opening so it was drowing its self so found a second hand one and am send the old for a rebuilt for a later date
